Outline of Industrial Design Laboratory
The special characteristic of this laboratory is the intimate joint research with the industries in this region. We conclude contracts and carry out collaborative researches with over 10 companies and municipalities every year. Most students participate the practical studies to learn the strictness of society and basic work techniques, and this environment makes them easier to find the jobs that utilized their specialization. Most graduates succeed as designers or planners at design/product planning departments in companies. Moreover, the most members are graduate students or research students from many different nations such as China, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, Mongol and other countries. Iwate University is one of the few universities that can obtain master’s (Art engineering)/doctoral (Art engineering) degree among the national universities in Japan. The principal researches of this laboratory are; methodology of the idea support in the design process, fundamental researches using the coupling of the wood and applied study to furniture and toys, research for the package design, study of the package design and research for the traditional crafts for export market. We will continue to develop by going back and forth between theory and practice as the laboratory’s motto.
