Designing Practice

This section introduces the laboratory curriculum. In the laboratory, students identify issues in society and everyday life not only at the regional level but also in collaboration with universities overseas, and propose solutions from the perspective of design studies. In addition, the laboratory engages in exchanges with partner universities abroad and conducts joint workshops.

BA 1st Year

To acquire the knowledge and ways of thinking required in design studies and information engineering, students identify issues related to “dissatisfaction, anxiety, and curiosity” found in society and everyday life, working either in groups or individually. They then learn methods of ideation aimed at solving these issues, while also developing fundamental skills in hands-on making and fabrication.

・Designing a package for eggs that prevent the eggs from cracking

・Designing a clock dials
・Designing chocolates for giving love
・Making beautiful stereoimages by carving chalk

BA 2nd Year

Building on the ideation methods acquired in the first year, students approach concrete problem-solving from the perspective of design. For example, they learn foundational competencies necessary for practical design activities, such as design processes and interface design for utilizing AI, and interface design based on universal color principles. Alongside this, students continue to develop their basic making and fabrication skills introduced in the first year.

・Making a model from Styrofoam

BA 3rd Year

With a focus on hands-on design practice, students who are assigned to a laboratory from the second semester of the third year may also participate in collaborative projects involving industry, academia, and government as part of their coursework. In some cases, students gain experience in selling products they have designed, allowing them to observe how their designs are evaluated and received in society.

BA 4th Year

As the culmination of the undergraduate program, students conduct concrete research in design studies through their graduation thesis. Students who wish to further enhance their skills may continue to graduate school, where they can pursue advanced research in design studies and art and design engineering.
